Ever since I decided to stop using birth control 10 years ago I've experienced horrendous menstrual cycles. Every 28 or so days the severe cramps, hormonal imbalances and wicked mood swings would come. I would piss and moan and scream things like "THIS IS UNFAIR!!!" My temper would flare so bad that my partner and I actually named this piece of me Grumpy Gus (see below for a drawing). I contemplated getting back on birth control (yeah, they were that bad) but no, I didn't want some modern day medicine disconnecting me from my womanhood. Instead I found a way to welcome my monthly cycle, the thing that makes me magical and beautiful as a women and stop resisting with such agony and despair. That is when I created my Red Tent Ritual. This ritual is performed on the first night of my first day of the cycle.
I take off all of my clothes and hop into bed with a few of my favorite things. I put a pillow under my lower back and insert Foria Relief Suppositories into my vagina. As the medicine is melting I smoke an indica joint from Henry's Original and begin to relax. I drink turmeric and ginger tea from Trader Joe's, eat grapes & chocolate and rub Doterra Clary Calm on my ovaries. Some months I invite my partner to rub my feet, breasts or ovaries and one month he fed me grapes! Although it is fun to have him involved, I enjoy these nights alone. I imagine that I am living in a community of women who when cycling together nurture and care for one another. It is quite amazing!
Grumpy Gus was drawn after an integration period of building a relationship, understanding and accepting this part of me.
After I learned who he was, why he was here, and what his purpose was I was able to love him and appreciate him!
